Suele emplearse con matiz peyorativo.◘ 'Persona que acompaña habitualmente a otra, a la que, por lo general, está subordinada': " Los dos adláteres del comisario dieron las buenas noches" (MendozaVerdad [Esp. 1975]). Es común en cuanto al género: el/ la adlátere. Más raramente se usa como adjetivo, con el significado de 'contiguo' o 'subordinado': "En proporción también directa a los cierres de fábricas de automóviles y de industrias adláteres, ascendió abruptamente el índice del desempleo" (Grande Fábula [Esp. 1991]). La palabra adlátere surge por deformación de la locución latina a látere 'al lado', en la que la preposición originaria a acaba confundiéndose con ad ('junto a').
